A quality cedar box with specifications in mind for nesting Wood Ducks!
Why a Wood Duck House?
Provide a safe nesting box for the gorgeous wood duck. Nesting season begins in February and lasts through June. A hen lays 10-15 eggs. Incubation begins after the last egg is laid. Eggs hatch about 30 days later. The next day, the hen is softly calling to the ducklings to jump out of the nest and follow her to the nearest lake or pond.
Things to keep in mind when using a Wood Duck House
Nest boxes should be mounted on a wooden 4" x 4" board or 2" diameter metal post. May be placed over land or water. No box should be mounted without a predator guard to keep snakes & raccoons out. Nest boxes mounted on trees near water are prone to predators (raccoons stealing the eggs). Boxes should be lined with 3-5" of wood shavings - not sawdust (tends to compact too much). Don’t Forget... Annual maintenance!
