Flickers love our Flicker House, but unfortunately starlings do too. The experimental design exploits the flicker's tree climbing ability. Approaching the entry from below, the opening is protected from direct access by a Plexiglas shield. Front opens for clean-out and houses come with inviting bag of wood chips for nesting material. This innovative home is designed with flickers in mind, utilizing their natural tendencies to create a comfortable roost. The front panel on this home slants inward as it travels near the base, allowing flickers to climb up it as they would a tree. A Plexiglas shield rests a few inches out from the 2.5" diameter entrance hole. Flickers can easily avoid this by climbing up from the bottom of the home, while starlings have much more difficulty and prefer to enter homes in a straightforward manner. Additional features on the house create a welcoming roost for common flickers. The slanted roof has a significant overhang to protect the interior of the house from precipitation, while small cut outs on either side of the home keep the internal temperature regulated. Angled corners on the recessed base offer drainage to the nest, keeping it dry, and the deep design prevents predators from reaching the eggs. The rough hewn pine allows nestlings a secure grip when they are trying to exit the nest. The front panel lifts upward for easy nest checks, and a small metal latch in the center keeps it securely closed. The 0.75" thick wood helps insulate the home, while the light color of the unfinished pine aids in keeping it cool in the summer. A bag of wood chips is also included for more insulation around the eggs. This pine will age to a graceful gray color over time and with exposure to the elements, enhancing its natural beauty. A metal hanger at the top of the item and predrilled hole near the base allow it to be post or tree mounted with ease.
